General advices of Ministry for foreign affairs to travelers
The Austrian health care system is highly developed. Healthcare and prevention are very effective, so you don’t have to be
afraid of major epidemic. But of course, the country is exposed to the threat of AIDS or avian influenza, just as much as
our country, or other states in Europe. Emergency medical care of Hungarian citizens is guaranteed with the same conditions,
like Austrian citizens.
It is our experience that, in the absence of the European health card, citizens only get the absolutely necessary life-saving
medical supplies, but that costs (including rescue costs) have to be reimbursed.
We would like to draw your attention, that the costs of rescue, and general health care costs in Austria are much higher than
in Hungary, so it can be a huge expense for a foreigner. Thats why it is so important to take out an insurance covering all damages.
